Here I am. Two years after my husband and I went through our belongings and decided to dive into The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. In 2018, we did all the things. We went through each piece of clothing and junk drawer item. We’d hold the piece up to our hearts and ask: do I love you? Did I love you once?

And for all the things we loved once we threw away. And all the items we still loved, we kept. And for the things we kept, everything had a home. We learned how to fold our socks into neat little squares so they’d be more efficient in their drawers. It was a bit much, to be honest.

I’ve always been a person who feels comfortable around a minimal amount of clutter. Minimalism feels unfinished to me. It’s very hard for me to leave a wall bare or an untouched corner in our house. Living in New York in my early twenties taught me how to use small spaces efficiently. So I thought that Tidying Up would be somewhat difficult for me. I was wrong.

Two years ago it was very freeing to get rid of the dresses and shoes and things I’ve kept because they had sentimental value at some time in my life. I held each item up to my heart, parted my ways with it, and thanked it for what it had given in me in its life. It was time to go on to another life…at the thrift store.

Two Years Later

A new home, a marriage, and a baby. A lot has happened to throw the Tidying Up routine off its rocker.

  • We actually kept a pretty good habit of folding and stacking his t-shirts and underwear.
  • Mine, not so much.
  • We no longer fold our socks…because why?
  • We acquired more stuff. A lot more stuff.
  • I stopped color-coding my closet.
  • I do still thank things when I throw them away.
  • My husband definitely doesn’t.

Here are a few things I’ve learned after two years of Tidying Up and other hacks I’ve learned to maximize small spaces.
